ABOUT HIM
MICHAEL JACKSON
(1958 - 2009 )
“I was a veteran before I was a teenager.” Literally growing up in showbusiness, Michael Jackson performed from the age of five with his siblings Jermaine, Jackie, Tito and Marlon in the singing group the Jackson Five. The young performers sang in their hometown of Gary, Indiana, and later signed a recording deal which netted them a series of hits in the 1970s, including ABC and I’ll Be There. Jackson went solo in the early 1980s, and his Thriller album of 1982 realised sales of 50 million worldwide, making him one of the biggest-ever selling artists in popular music. The album was promoted with the use of high-energy video clips showcasing Jackson’s dancing ability. A series of top-selling albums followed through the Eighties and into the Nineties. He married Lisa Marie Presley, daughter of Elvis Presley, in 1994, but the pair divorced in 1996. During the 1990s Jackson was dogged by perceptions of increasing eccentricity, and in 2004 was charged with a number of sexual improprieties with minors. On June 25, 2009 Michael Jackson died from drug-induced cardiac arrest as he was preparing for a comeback tour which was to kick off with a sold out show in London. A film called 'This Is It' was released soon after his death which captures the last few days of his life.
