ABOUT HIM:

KING SUNNY ADE
(1946 - Current)
The legendary Nigerian musician has become intimately identified with the music he helped popuarise, juju. Blending African percussion with electric guitar and other Western instruments, juju was pioneered by others, but it was Ade who took it to the world. His early desire to be a musician led to him dropping out of school. He played hi-life music (marked by its trademark infectious guitar sound) in bands in Lagos until he formed his own band, the Green Spots, in the mid-1960s. They later became known as the Africa Beats, and during the 1970s Ade developed his own brand of juju with them, intricate yet laid back, with Ade providing his understated yet mesmeric vocals. The band’s ever increasing fame finally led to a signing with a major international label in 1982, and the world release of the album Juju Music. King Sunny Ade became a an instant star of the then nascent world music. Later releases and tours confirmed his status as one of the giants of contemporary African music.
