ABOUT HER:
Edith PIAF
(Edith Gassion) (1915-1963)
Born into poverty in Paris, the teenage Piaf was literally singing on the streets when discovered by a theatre promoter. Dubbed “the little sparrow” and “the waif sparow”, she established herself as a well-known cabaret performer in France in the 1930s, before tours of the US after WWII. Her soulful voice, evocative of the poverty, sadness and loneliness of her childhood, struck a chord with audiences everywhere, and she became an international star. Songs for which she is renowned include La Vie En Rose, Milord, and Vagabond.
