ABOUT THEM:

U2 formed from a school band in Dublin in 1976. U2 went on to become a “supergroup” of the Eighties and Nineties, with singer Bono (Paul Hewson) among rock music’s best-known identities. Their victory at an Irish talent quest in 1978 led to them being spotted by a record company executive. They released two critically-acclaimed albums in the early 1980s, but broke through with 1983’s War album. It included the hit New Year’s Day, a typically ultra high energy U2 track, which became an international chart-topper. Later dubbed “the band of the Eighties”, they lived up to it with a series of critically and popularly successful albums, including the smash hit Joshua Tree. Unlike many bands who attain similar fame, U2 managed to maintain their fire and energy, and were still at the top of contemporary rock music tree in the new millennium. “It's stasis that kills you off in the end, not ambition.”
